Common Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain often feels like an ache on the top or side of the arm, a pinch with reaching overhead, or pain when lying on that side. Typical patterns include rotator cuff irritation, bursitis, impingement, acromioclavicular sprain, and frozen shoulder. You may notice weakness, clicking, and limited reach behind the back, especially when dressing or reaching for the seat belt.

Common Causes

Common causes include sudden changes in training load, repetitive reaching, overhead sport, heavy lifting, long desk time, and awkward sleep position. Neck and upper back stiffness can add strain. Weakness in rotator cuff or shoulder blade muscles lets the joint overload. Red flags include a fall with deformity, dislocation, severe weakness, fever, or persistent night pain. Seek urgent medical care if these occur.
